Get Off the Lazy River!

Fresh Manna 2009© by Renee Burt

I’ll never forget the first time I went to Wet N Wild water park. They had a “Lazy River,” which is a huge circular shaped waterway that gets you nowhere…you just ride around lethargically in circles. My sister and I grabbed our inner tubes, laid back and just let the current take us for a ride. The key was to not fight the current and just let it carry you along…until you wanted to exit the Lazy River and get back on solid ground! There were only a few exit points, and to get to one, you not only had to fight the current that wanted to zip you right past the exit…but you also had to fight your way through the sea of people floating along with you. It was hard work to buck the current and buck the crowd!

It reminds me of the state of “current” affairs in the world. We grab the news off the internet or on the TV, and we just lay back and let it take us on a ride that gets us nowhere. Listen to it often enough and it’ll make your mind feel like it’s going in circles, with no end in sight! And if you get “lazy” and listen more to the world’s sad news than we listen to the good news of God’s Word? We can get caught up in the current flow of thinking, and can find it difficult to fight that current negative thinking that wants to carry us down the river into discouragement, hopelessness, and confusion. We need to shake off lethargy, fight the current world’s way of thinking and get our feet back on the solid ground of God’s Word! And if we do? We’ll have what it takes to stop singing the sorry song the world is singing, and instead sing a song of praise that God is for us, He’s in us, and He’s with us…no matter what’s going on in the world today!

Psalm 40:2-3 NLT ~ He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.
