My Special Father’s Day

There are always many reasons why Father’s Day can be special. There were a few for me this year. First three of my four wonderful children came over last week to celebrate Father’s day. We were going to be gone on Father’s day so they thought it appropriate to celebrate early (with help from their mother.) It was the normal fun day of gifts, cards, food, games, and hilariously funny stories of their childhood and my heroic and not so heroic moments.

Then for Father’s Day, Renee and I traveled to Dallas to see our new grandchild and first grandson Liam born to Jeff and Lisa Burt. He is three months old and truly cute (grandfather’s bias allowed.) It was so much fun to spend time with them while getting to know Liam.

And then there was the special bonus. We went shopping over at Fry’s – a gigantic electronics store. While there, Jeff and I had to take Liam into the bathroom as he blew out his diaper. To our fun surprise they had a Diaper Deck fold down infant changing table. I was the inventor of the Diaper Deck, the world’s first commercial infant changing table back in 1985. My son Jeff was the inspiration for it. He blew out more diapers than seemed humanly possible. If there had been an Olympics for it… It took about five years to convince the world that they needed this invention and they finally took off on a national level in the early 1990’s.

By that time my children were out of diapers and so I never really got to use my own invention – that is until my grandchildren arrived. And so, we got to change Liam on what I invented because of his father’s abusive diaper habits 25 years ago. That made Father’s Day even more special and fun!
