Oh, the places you’ll go!

This weekend’s Fresh Manna from my wife
Renee Burt

So often, we make having fun FAR too complicated! Take tonight, for instance. My husband, Tim, and I were the speakers at our married couples group at church. Tim was going to do most of the teaching, and I was going to interject just a couple of stories and comments. So, since he would be doing more of the talking, I sat on a stool during his parts. Well, I was sitting there pretty stationary…when he started using his arms to speak, and his arm wound up being just inches from my face. It stayed there for about a minute…and the entire time, I imagined reaching up with my microphone and poking it in his armpit. It put a twinkle in my eye, just thinking about seeing him jump!

There was a problem though. First, we were speaking in front of about 200 people…and I was pretty sure most of them wouldn’t think it was appropriate speaker-behavior. Plus, Tim was making a serious point…and it might make him lose his train of thought, which wouldn’t be good…nuts! But I wanted to do it…I thought about doing it…and I had fun thinking about it. Which brings me to my point! Fun is what you make it. It can happen when you go or do something fun…or when you’re laughing with another person…OR it can happen whenever, wherever if you just let your mind have at it!

I can’t tell you how many times I stop myself…before I do something that sounds like it would be fun…but I know it’s not the right time or place. It’s the otter in me. But I don’t let that stop me from having fun thoughts! Oh, the places I go (isn’t that the title of a Dr. Seuss book?)…oh, the things I do and say…and I don’t have to worry about it being at the right place or time. The truth of the matter is, none of us can stop to have fun as often as we’d probably like to. But we can have fun in our thoughts any time, any day…and on a night like tonight? When I was feeling exhausted from the week? It was just the prescription (written out in the Bible) that I needed! So, try it…and oh, the places YOU’LL go!

Proverbs 15:30 MSG ~ A twinkle in the eye means joy in the heart…
Proverbs 17:22 AMP ~ A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing…
