This gal was telling me that she had a situation she needed to handle that created a great sense of dread! The more she thought about it, the greater that dread became until she was anxious, overwhelmed, and feeling sick about it. I told her, Dread isn’t from God and you can’t let it fester in you! You’re becoming anxious, overwhelmed, and sick about something that hasn’t even happened—or that may never happen! You’re worrying about something you think might happen in the future—imagining all its worst possibilities or outcomes. If you allow it to continue to overwhelm your thoughts with dread, it will become like an insidious cloud that seeps into all the corners of your mind, until it chokes your peace, confidence, and joy.
So what do you do when you feel that sense of dread? Remember that most times what we dread comes to nothing! Psalm 53:5 NIV says, “There they were, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to dread!”
Situations are seldom as hard to handle as our mind imagines. The conversation doesn’t usually go anything like our mind conjured up and the situation to confront is seldom as bad as dreaded. And many times we wind up realizing there was nothing to dread!
So have you felt overwhelmed with dreadful thoughts that have been like an insidious cloud overwhelming your mind and heart? God word is called quick and powerful! It is because the power of it when it’s read and believed can be like a pin popping an inflated balloon or a foot crushing a bug. Philippians 4:6 NLT is an example of that! It says, “Don’t worry about [or dread] anything; instead, pray about everything.” And 1 Peter 5:7 NLT says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”
When God’s promises are meditated on and trusted, they most often pull us right out of deep hole and anxious thinking and instead help us refocus on God thoughts! Let the initial cares and worries you feel be nothing more than an alarm that wakes you up and reminds you to cast your cares unto the Lord. You purpose to shut down those thought knowing the Lord cares for you, and instead immediately turn those dreads into faith-filled prayers you lay at Jesus’ feet. Do so and you’ll have learned to eliminate the dread from your head!
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NKJV) “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal
but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”
