God’s Plan For Marriage: Love, Purpose, and Power – A Marriage Series

God says, that two are better than one! We see that in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NLT. “Two are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” A husband and wife and Jesus make up that three-braided cord that’s not easily broken and that is what God wants for marriage. Oh the power of two! Oh the power of two, plus God! If husbands and wives only realized there is power and strength that God makes available when two people join together in unity in His will. Their potential is so great and that’s what God designed for marriage!

When God made man, he did not leave Adam to be alone to himself. Genesis 2:18 RSV reveals, “And the LORD God said, IT IS NOT GOOD that the man should be alone; I will make a helper fit for him.” From that very moment, there was greater power available to Adam and Eve together, than either of them could accomplish on their own. They were able to work together, have children together, and manage and rule their lives according to the plan of God together. God called this having dominion. They weren’t domestic partners. God had created something called marriage. It was a covenant relationship between a man and a woman, and even greater than that―a covenant relationship between themselves and God. They were to become the three stranded chord that would not be easily broken!

Marriage began with the first two people, and in the garden of Eden! In the garden from the very beginning, Adam said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his WIFE, and they will become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24 NKJV) Adam said something that he had never actually experienced. This was a truth taught to Adam by God. How do I know? Because Adam had no father or mother. He had zero experiential level of marriage and family. He was created by God and God had taught him what marriage was and marriage was about. God is the author of marriage and He knows His intent for it. He imparted this truth to Adam.

Eve became His wife in the garden. They moved over from being two individuals each capable of accomplishing good things, to a husband and wife that would become one flesh―one in spirit and purpose―two people destined for great things!

What does that mean, “One flesh?” It means two people joined together by God as covenant partners with God. They would work together toward a life that reflects God’s love, His will, and His purposes in the earth. Upon marrying, they begin to shed portions of their individuality in order to adapt to each other to become a team that loves and respects and honors each other. Marriage helped them adapt from selfish to selfless―esteeming each other and each other’s needs. God would teach  each of them how to give respect and honor to each other’s gifting, ability, and instincts that would benefit their lives, their marriage, and their children.

When a husband and wife will walk in unity, great power becomes available to them. Matthew 18:19 NLT says, “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.”  What a powerful force that is! Can you see why the devil would work to keep couples in strife? Can you see why he’d try to stir up warfare that would keep them from sitting down and praying together? If Renee and I have been consistent in any area of our lives, it’s been in praying together. That time may be a few minutes or it may be longer but we pray about everything together. And we’ve seen a lifetime of answered prayers that we think so many people could experience but don’t! And for no good reason!

There is no power on this earth as threatening to Satan as a marriage and family that knows, loves, and lives for God, and that prays God’s will in agreement! Not only will they be blessed, they will see far more answered prayers than others, and will influence others toward God while eroding Satan’s efforts.

Remember this: very real and great benefits come from a unified marriage that continuously drops its bucket in the well of prayer. That’s when they discover that one plus one equals power and strength! As it is written,  “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.  Matthew 18:19 (NLT)
