Fresh Manna

Do you ever eat a meal, know you’ve eaten enough, and yet keep eating until you feel stuffed—even hurting from eating too much? This is a common occurrence in the lives of many people.

Why do people eat past the point of satisfaction—eating until they feel uncomfortably stuffed? Could it be that they are also trying to satisfy their future hunger? Are they eating enough to hold them for a long time? Much has been written about this. It has to do with the subconscious fear of not trusting that your next meal will be there when you want it.

Regardless of whether that is rational or not, it’s a common fear that we see throughout human history. Let me show you. In Exodus 16:4 we see the Lord trying to teach His people to learn to trust Him. It says, “Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.” The Lord through Moses also instructed them to use up what He had given them. If they had more than they needed, share it, but they were not to keep it until the next day or it would turn to maggots. Why did the Lord want to test them? Not to find out what they would do. He knew what they would do. He wanted them to see for themselves that they didn’t trust Him. We see their test score the next day. Exodus 16:20 says, “However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.”

They flunked the test! Why? For fear that God would not follow through and give them their next meal. And for fear that they wouldn’t have enough. Those fears caused them to disobey God and hoard up. That fear is very real amongst people today—including God’s people!

This is where having faith in God’s promises becomes critical. The promise of Psalm 37:19 (NLT) says, “They will not be disgraced in hard times; even in famine they will have more than enough.” The original Hebrew word for enough is translated satisfied.  You will be satisfied.  But the word also means filled and having plenty!  This scripture screams of God saying, Trust Me, I’ll take care of you! 

Faith in this promise is such a powerful force! To move over to a position of sincere heart faith in the midst of negative circumstances, and be delivered of the fear of not having enough later or tomorrow is mountain moving! When your circumstances say the opposite and you want to panic, to be able to lean on and trust God is mountain moving!  To get to a position of faith where we hold on to God’s promise of being satisfied—of knowing God will take care of you is a freedom that is almost indescribable.

If you skip a meal, you might experience a hunger pain but you will not die. You may experience a different type of pain such as fear or anxiety or a temporary sense of lack in other areas of your life, but you won’t die. You don’t want to let those pains derail you from having great faith in God. Hebrews 11:6 NIV says that “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.”  Ask God in faith for what you need. Know that God will hear and answer your prayer! He says so! 1 John 5:14-15 (NKJV) “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”  

Understand that the answer will come and most likely, not in the way you’d think or in the timing you’d like to see. But what you can ultimately have faith in and know is that His answer will be better than what you asked!  That is what Ephesians 3:20 KJV says, “…exceedingly beyond what we can ask or think according to the power within us.” That power within us is God’s power ignited by sincere faith and trust. Thank Him from that point on. Trust God for His provision. As a child of God, hold on to your inheritance of faith through Jesus. Don’t make this something you try. Make this something you live—moment by moment, day by day, year by year! Hold on to that promise of faith so that even in difficult times you’re not driven by inner fears but driven by trust in the Lord’s faithfulness knowing you’ll be satisfied by His help in your life. He may not be there when you want Him to be but He is always there and His answers are always right on time!

Psalms  NKJV 37:18-19 “The LORD knows the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.”
