Stand Strong When Praying for Those in Authority

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

I want to share a story that happened to me. After getting up early and getting ready for my day, I sat down at my computer to respond to some of my followers on Twitter. What I began to read from them almost put me in shock! There were literally hundreds of over-the-top vile, profane, and hateful comments toward me, calling me a hypocrite, a false prophet, a fake preacher, and a fake pastor, and on and on. They were all responses to these scriptures I had posted from Psalm 33:18-20 (NLT2). “But the LORD watches over those who fear Him, those who rely on His unfailing love.  He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine. We put our hope in the LORD. He is our help and our shield.”

I could not figure out why these verses would draw so many atheists and haters to respond when this has never happened before. I was truly perplexed. I said in my heart, Why Lord? What caused this to happen? Suddenly, I heard this in my spirit. President Donald Trump retweeted your tweet.

I went to President Trump’s Twitter page and started reading his tweets. And sure enough, about six or seven tweets down the page, I saw that he had retweeted my tweet with Psalm 33: 18-20. Just to be clear, I didn’t send it to him. I simply tweeted the verses to all my Twitter followers. President Trump has 76 million followers on Twitter. That led to millions of people seeing my tweet. Some checked me out and read my profile, seeing that I was a Pastor. I tweet a prayer almost every week. And so, the haters began to hate. And as I said earlier, they were some of the most vile and profane tweets I’ve ever seen. They weren’t disagreeing with me. They were hating me!

I did not vote for President Trump because it was said he was a Christian. I voted for him because I believed he had the courage to lead this country in a great direction. It wasn’t just what he was saying during his campaign but what he’d been saying his entire life. There are many videos and interviews from the time he was a young man, speaking about the needed direction for our country. And I did believe that he had become a Christian. I did because he said so and because he had surrounded himself with Christian leaders to advise and pray for him. I wasn’t looking at his past like those that hate him do. How do so many flaunt his sins like they don’t have their own in their life? Aren’t they glad no one is looking into their past and putting it in the press? People are easier on themselves than they are on others, as we see in Proverbs 16:2 (NLT2): “People may be pure in their own eyes, but the LORD examines their motives.”

I knew that Jesus had done for President Trump’s life what He had done for mine. Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV) “Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet; They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.”  And for his style of communicating, I simply saw him also like me, someone under construction who is being transformed by the Holy Spirit day by day. All Christians who are honest know that transformation within us is a life-long venture. We all change slowly and, in some areas of our lives, slower than others areas. And so I pray for him daily.

The degree of hatred that poured out—some from Christians, was appalling! But, what I do praise God for is that the Bible verses I tweeted were read by millions. That’s why I got on Twitter in the first place—to expose God’s word to the world that does not know Jesus! If you read, watch, or listen to the news in any fashion, you’ve already noticed the haters of our President. For me, I see the greatest supporter of Israel of any Presidency in history. Our last three Presidents said in their campaigns that they would move the United States embassy to Jerusalem but never did. President Trump did. He has also done more than any President to stop abortion. He has also done more to help people of diversity than any President. He has also done more to empower women than any President. He has done more to protect against abortion and infanticide. And on and on. And that led me to my closing thought today.

How did people feel about Solomon in his day? It was said he was a hard task-master. People worked very hard under his leadership. He was also a womanizer, but culture allowed for it. Were there haters, then?  Did it take the queen of Sheba to come from Ethiopia to behold all that Solomon had accomplished and speak the words that maybe few others had?

2 Chronicles 9:7-8 (NLT2) “How happy your people must be! What a privilege for your officials to stand here day after day, listening to your wisdom! Praise the LORD your God, who delights in you and has placed you on the throne as king to rule for Him. Because God loves Israel and desires this kingdom to last forever, He has made you king over them so you can rule with justice and righteousness.”

No matter what anyone thinks about President Donald Trump, as Christians, we are obligated to sincerely pray for all leaders of our our nation, regardless of political party. I have faithfully done this with every President since I gave my life to the Lord. As Christians, we are called to do so! And please don’t hate me for it! Instead, please join me in praying for our President and our future President and for God to raise up godly and righteous leadership in every aspect of life for our nation and nations around the world. It is the only hope for a better world! And it begins with prayer!

Daniel 2:20-21 (NIV) “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”
