Peace and Strength In Times of Discouragement Part Two

People have all sorts of funny ideas about God, about Heaven, about who they pray to, and who helps them in this life. For example, I heard someone say, I prayed to my grandmother in Heaven, and I just know she has helped me a lot. A person can believe that and maybe even draw some emotional peace and strength from that, but it’s not true! Because it’s not true, it will not really provide true lasting strength and peace. God does not have us pray to people, saints, or angels in Heaven. Angels do help us, but only in response to God! God has us look to no other than Himself as our Savior, Lord, and King for every need!

God has not commissioned any person in Heaven, including His mother Mary, our relatives, or anyone but Himself to take on that role. Otherwise, they would be playing the role of God. If you thought differently from what someone taught you or from a religion class, don’t be offended. Instead, rejoice that you are learning this critical truth right now! Scripture will reinforce it! Acts 4:12 NLT says, “There is salvation in no one else! There is no other name in all of Heaven for people to call on (than Jesus) to save them.” The word “save” means to protect, heal, preserve, to help, and make whole. This is supernatural help and the work of God alone. To pray or cry out to anyone other than the Lord is born out of imagination and is not true nor God’s will.

  • Psalms 83:18 (NLT) says, “…they will learn that you alone are called the Lord, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth.”
  • Psalms 86:10 (NLT) says, “For you are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God.”
  • Psalms 71:5 (NLT) says, “O Lord, you alone are my hope. I’ve trusted you, O Lord, from childhood.”
  • Psalms 71:16 (NLT) says, “I will praise your mighty deeds, O Sovereign Lord. I will tell everyone that you alone are just.”

I had two different friends who had to go to the hospital recently. In both cases, their body was low on something. One of them was low on magnesium, and that led them to check for tumors. They found a big one that was sucking the magnesium from her body. They removed it and gave her an infusion of magnesium, and soon she was better and good as new.  The other friend was simply dehydrated and needed an infusion of fluids. They did this, and he was doing better in no time at all!  I say this because we daily need and infusion of God’s word to offset the discouragements Satan tries to bring to our lives! God’s word and prayer is that infusion!

Real strength and peace in hard situations are gained from learning and putting faith in God’s promises and believing that they are yours. This is why it’s so important to meditate on them every single day! They are the sludge hammer to discouragement and lies of the devil, and they are the infusion to feed your soul (your mind and emotions) and become the foundation of rock-solid faith! It’s from there that the peace that passes human understanding and strength from Him comes as revealed in Psalms 85:8 NIV. “I will listen to what God the LORD will say; He promises peace to His people, His saints– but let them not return to folly (believing in myths and fables.)

The strength and peace come from the joy of knowing that He loves you, listens to you, and promises to work on your behalf. This is the operation of your faith. When it’s strong and intact, you know and trust Him. That creates strength and peace and delivers you from the pit of discouragement and depression! Glory to God. And this is why David wrote in Psalms 46:1 NKJV and in Psalm 60:11 KJV “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble… for vain is the help of man.” So have faith and receive His strength and peace today!

1 John 5:14-15 (NIV) “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of Him.”
