The world is made up of those who know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior—and those who don’t. Among those without Christ, there are different responses to believers. Some seem to be at war with Christians and openly resist anything about God. Others are curious, quietly observing to understand what makes a Christian’s life different. And then there are those who are searching right now—hungry for truth, waiting for someone like you or me to help them find it.
Yet the majority of non-Christians don’t like being told about Jesus, about biblical truth, or about right and wrong. Many resist it strongly and try to silence believers in workplaces and everyday life. But even when they push back, something deeper is happening beneath the surface.
People often sense something they can’t quite explain—the presence of God in a believer who is sincerely living for Him. When we live according to God’s Word, with His love guiding our attitudes and actions, it creates a response. Those who are open to God are drawn in. They watch, they listen, and they want to know if what they see is real. But those who resist God often feel uncomfortable—not necessarily because of what we say, but because of what we represent.
The Bible describes this as a spiritual aroma. It’s not something natural—it’s supernatural.
2 Corinthians 2:15–16 (NKJV): “For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life…”
God calls us to be His fragrance in the earth. To some, that fragrance brings life, hope, and truth. To others, it exposes their distance from God, which can make them uncomfortable. But either way, our role is not to hide that fragrance—it’s to live it.
The world may try to convince us to keep our faith private. Even some who call themselves Christians, but have never truly known Jesus, may agree with that thinking. But if we understand what Christ has done for us and the purpose of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we realize we are called to shine—not shrink back.
I learned this personally years ago while working in the airline industry. A policy was put in place that employees could not share their faith unless someone asked. That didn’t stop me—it shaped how I lived. Instead of forcing conversations, I prayed daily that God would help me be a light. I focused on doing my job with excellence, treating people with kindness, reading my Bible openly, and naturally speaking about how good God had been in my life.
The result? People asked.
They opened the door, and I simply walked through it. Conversations about Jesus flowed naturally, and many hearts were touched. The harvest was there—I just needed to live in a way that made people curious enough to ask.
That truth has never changed.
Over the years, whether in ministry, writing devotionals, or sharing online, I’ve seen the same pattern. Some people reject the message. Others are drawn to it. And many are deeply impacted by it. I never set out with a grand plan. I simply cared about people who didn’t know the depth of God’s love and looked for ways to help them discover it.
God will do the same through you.
If your heart is to reach people, He will open doors you never imagined—right within your own personality, your own relationships, and your own daily life. You don’t have to force anything. You simply have to live it.
You are His aroma.
Some will be drawn. Some will resist. Some will watch quietly to see if you are genuine. And some are ready right now—they just need someone willing to shine.
Don’t hide your light. This is your moment, your calling, your opportunity to live a life that matters not just for today, but for eternity. There is nothing more significant to God than this.
Be His fragrance today.
Romans 1:16 (NIV): “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…”
Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me to live as Your fragrance in this world. Let my life reflect Your love, truth, and grace in a way that draws others to You. Give me boldness without pressure, compassion without compromise, and a heart that truly cares for those who don’t yet know You. Use my life to open doors for Your truth and to point others to Jesus. I choose to shine for You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
