Luke 1:38 (NKJV)  Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to Your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary was a beautiful woman who loved God. But her beauty was not merely outward—it was formed within. It flowed from a sincere, steady devotion to the Lord and a deep desire to live for Him. That love shaped her character, her humility, and her faith. It made her radiant with a beauty that cannot be manufactured—a beauty that is the gentle touch of Heaven upon a surrendered human life.

Joseph, the man she was pledged to marry, was also a God-fearing man. Scripture reveals him as obedient, righteous, and sensitive to the voice of God. He was not driven by public approval but by quiet faithfulness. Together, Joseph and Mary believed their impending marriage to be the will of God. Two hearts devoted to Him, preparing to become one flesh—believing that together their lives would reflect His love and purposes in greater measure.

They longed to live for God and to do His will. And then His will came to Mary in a way few would ever experience.

Luke 1:26–37 (NLT) In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His ancestor David. And He will reign over Israel forever; His Kingdom will never end!” Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and He will be called the Son of God… For nothing is impossible with God.”

How did Mary respond to a declaration so overwhelming, so incomprehensible, and so life-altering?

Luke 1:38 (NKJV) gives us her answer once more: “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to Your word.”

Those words—“Let it be to me according to Your word”—are among the most powerful words ever spoken on earth. They were spoken in humility, yet carried the weight of Heaven. They were heard by angels and honored at the throne of God.

These are the kinds of words spoken by people like Abraham, Moses, and David—words of surrender, trust, and obedience. They are faith-filled words that align a human heart with the will of God and allow His purposes to move from Heaven into history.

From that moment on, Mary trusted God’s Word above her circumstances, her reputation, and her future. She did not fully understand how it would unfold—but she believed the One who had spoken.

That is the power of the Word of God in our lives.

God’s Word still carries creative power. When it is believed, received, and embraced by faith, it produces life within us. It plants divine truth deep in our hearts—truth that strengthens faith, reshapes our thinking, and brings God’s promises into view. Like Mary, when we receive God’s Word with trust and surrender, it begins a work in us that only He can complete.

We are not bound by the discouragements that come fast and furious in this fallen world. We possess something greater. We have a book filled with words from the heart of God—covenant promises from a loving Father to His children. These words are supernatural. When they are loved and embraced, as Mary embraced the Word spoken to her, they can lift us from despair to hope in a moment. They can move us from the pit to the mountaintop in an instant.

You are not alone.

You are loved by the God of this universe—and by His Son Jesus, who gave His life for yours. If you will allow Him, He will make that love personal. He will warm your heart with hope and steady your soul with truth.

Jeremiah 31:3 (NIV)  “The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.’”

Like Mary, may we learn to say—again and again—
“Let it be to me according to Your word.”
