The older we get, the more we realize just how quickly life passes. The years that once seemed to crawl by in our youth suddenly feel like they are flying. One birthday blends into the next. Children become adults. Grandchildren arrive. Seasons change, and before we know it, we find ourselves wondering, "Where did the time go?"
James reminds us of this reality with sobering clarity: "What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (James 4:14). Those words aren't meant to discourage us. They're meant to awaken us. They remind us that our time on earth is precious, limited, and meant to be lived with purpose.
King David came to that same realization during one of his intimate conversations with God. Rather than fearing the brevity of life, he asked the Lord to help him see it clearly. He prayed, "Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, and that my life is fleeing away... And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you" (Psalm 39:4-7 NLT).
David understood something that many people never discover. When we remember that life is temporary, we begin to see what is truly important. Many of the things that consume our attention today won't matter at all when viewed from eternity. We spend time worrying about possessions, chasing recognition, or allowing distractions to pull us away from God's purposes. Yet one day we'll look back and realize that the greatest investments were never the things we accumulated, but the people we loved, the faith we lived, and the lives we influenced for Christ.
Renee and I have often talked about this very thing. We intentionally try to step back from the busyness of life and ask ourselves, "What really matters? What does God want us to accomplish while we're here?" Those conversations have helped us sort priorities from distractions. They strengthen our marriage, deepen our love for one another, and continually refocus our hearts on serving Jesus and fulfilling His purpose for our lives.
God's plan has always been much bigger than our own personal ambitions. His desire is that people everywhere would come to know His saving grace, experience His incredible love, and receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. What a privilege that He allows us to participate in that eternal work. Whether through a kind word, an encouraging conversation, an act of generosity, or simply living a faithful life before others, God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary, eternal purposes.
That's why the Apostle Paul wrote, "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV). Every day presents opportunities that will never come again. Once today is gone, it is gone forever. We cannot relive it, but we can choose to invest it wisely.
The beautiful truth is that nothing done for Christ is ever wasted. Jesus said, "If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded" (Mark 9:41 NLT). God notices every act of obedience, every sacrifice made in love, every prayer prayed, every encouraging word spoken, and every person pointed toward Him. Heaven keeps perfect records, and eternity will reveal rewards that this world could never measure.
One day, every one of us will realize just how quickly life passed. When that day comes, I hope we won't be filled with regret over the things we pursued that had little eternal value. Instead, may we rejoice knowing that we invested our lives in loving God, loving people, and advancing His kingdom.
Life truly is a mist. Eternity is forever. When we keep that perspective before us, we begin to live differently. We treasure people more than possessions. We pursue God's will more than our own comfort. We become intentional about making every day count for Christ. And in doing so, we not only honor Him, but we leave an eternal legacy that will outlive our brief years on earth.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life and for every day You graciously place before us. Teach us to number our days wisely and to see our lives through the lens of eternity. Help us not to become distracted by things that won't last, but to invest our time, our gifts, and our hearts in what matters most to You. Keep us faithful to Your calling, strengthen our love for You and for others, and use our lives to point people to Jesus. May we finish our race with joy, knowing we lived for Your glory and Your eternal purposes. In Jesus' name, Amen.
