“Singing Your Way to Power” Part Seven: “You Have Power!”

Psalm 8:2 says, “You have taught children and nursing infants to give you praise. They silence your enemies who were seeking revenge.”

Do you remember learning the ABC’s song. Do you remember singing it set to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?” Do you know why they teach little children knowledge set to music? Because music is instinctive and fun and easy to learn and when you put words to it. Now imagine combining the instinct to sing coupled with the Word of God. We’d be learning the Word of God by singing it. On that note, remember that Jesus spoke these powerful words: Matthew 18:3 “Jesus said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.”

Could it be out of Jesus’ love for the little children that He created them and us with the instinct to sing? Little children know a kingdom secret and so do the many that teach them. There is power in singing. I believe singing is instinctive to us all. That was exactly God’s plan and it would produce multiple benefits. Learning to sing God’s Word and His praises would lift our hearts toward Him, build our faith, and provide supernatural protection. Psalm 8:2 says, “You have taught children and nursing infants to give you praise. They silence your enemies who were seeking revenge.” In case you did not catch this, it’s tells us that sincere heart praise to God silences the enemies of our soul.

A great Bible story demonstrating the power of Praise in our life comes from 2 Chron. 20:20-25. King Jehoshaphat and his kingdom and people were about to be attacked by a vicious enemy. Terror hit their hearts. But Jehoshaphat was a godly leader. He loved God. He called the people to fast and pray. He then heard from God. They would defeat the enemy through praise. How foolish to most people would that sound? We read: 2 Chron. 20:20-25 “Early the next morning the army of Judah went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said, “Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God… After consulting the leaders of the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang: “Give thanks to the Lord; His faithful love endures forever!” At the moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves. The armies of Moab and Ammon turned against their allies from Mount Seir and killed every one of them. After they had finished off the army of Seir, they turned on each other. So when the army of Judah arrived at the lookout point in the wilderness, there were dead bodies lying on the ground for as far as they could see. Not a single one of the enemy had escaped.” That is turning what the devil meant for evil, for good!

I do realize that some sing more than others and that often has everything to do on what you focus on and how you use your time. But the natural desire to sing is instinctively within us and when you give yourself over to it, it flows instinctively from you. Now harness that instinct and sing songs that harness God’s Word and you will do what little children do. You will be putting God’s Words to music and in time, the word of God will flow from your heart and lips. It will also work to silence the enemies of your soul.

I hope you understand that much if not most of the warfare you face in your life is in your mind. Oh I am fully aware that we all face very real negative circumstances within our life. But, the warfare in our minds is often greater than the circumstances. You’ve probably heard it said somewhere that 99% of everything we worry about never comes to pass. I don’t know if that is true or not. What I do know is that worrying is warfare and it’s painful and it’s not from God yet it tries to hit our life almost daily. Singing songs of praise and worship calms our heart and mind and helps build our faith as what we sing brings us back into a remembrance of God’s love and promises working in our lives.

Psalm 100:4-5 tells us to “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.”

Psalm 98:4 says, “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises.”

When Renee was pregnant with our third child and almost full term, she was standing in our garage with our four year old daughter. I was out of town. She suddenly started to bleed heavily and was afraid to move. She told our four year old daughter – “Go in the house and call gramma’s house and tell her to come over right away. Stephanie went into the house but before calling, she first turned on a song by David Ingles called “I am healed.” David was the master at putting God’s word to song. Stephanie turned it up loud so Renee could hear it from the garage. This was the action and faith of a four year old. Stephanie came out singing it to Renee. She went to the hospital and had the baby. Everything turned out fine.

You have the instincts within you to sing and praise God. Praise – Honors God! It brings deliverance. It strengthens our faith. It is the language of Heaven. It is the voice of faith. It releases angels to minister on our behalf. It stills the voice of the enemy. It brings light to darkness and depression. It is your faith accepting God’s Word as truth and acknowledging it. It’s the release of your faith. It is calling things that are not as they were meant to be! It’s your instinct and brings power to live victoriously for God!
