Settle Down!

By Renee Burt

Yesterday was a warm day outside, which not only thrilled me after our cold winter, but it obviously thrilled the squirrels and birds too. I couldn’t help but be amused by one particular squirrel in our backyard. It was running all over the yard, looking like it had no clear destination in mind. And it certainly didn’t look like it was accomplishing a whole lot by running around in a rather hyper static way. Then I looked up and saw a bird doing the same thing…just flitting here and there and everywhere, but never arriving anywhere. And the funniest picture came to mind…it was of myself! I thought about how I get excited about something, and I have a human tendency to do just what that squirrel and bird did! In other words, I lose some focus and begin something else in the middle of what I’m already doing…but then I try to get back to what I should be doing, until the pull of this new thing I’m excited about pulls me away again. And so it goes. I flit here and there and everywhere…and in the end, I may not wind up at the “destination” I needed to arrive at that day. The Bible has a solution for that…it’s to settle down…or you could say to stay focused…or stick to the task at hand…so I can arrive each day at the place He is wanting to take me. So I need that Word for myself today. Well, really I need it everyday! How about you?

Proverbs 27:8 MSG ~ People who won’t settle down, wandering hither and yon, are like restless birds, flitting to and fro.
