There are seasons in every believer’s life when God feels farther away than He once did. We still love Him. We still believe His promises. Yet somehow the intimacy we once enjoyed seems to have faded. Prayer feels more difficult or distant. Worship seems quieter. Opening the Bible feels more like discipline than delight. During those times, it’s easy to wonder, Has God moved away from me?
The wonderful truth is that God hasn’t moved at all. James gives us one of the most hope-filled invitations in all of Scripture: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you…” (James 4:8). What a remarkable promise! God doesn’t begin by demanding perfection. He doesn’t say, “Clean yourself up, and then come to Me.” He simply invites us to take the first step. The moment we begin moving toward Him, we discover He has been waiting for us all along.
This isn’t an isolated promise tucked away in one passage. Throughout Scripture, God’s heart is consistently revealed. The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV). God isn’t hiding from His children. He delights in being found by those who genuinely seek Him. From Genesis to Revelation, we see a Father who continually reaches toward people, inviting them into fellowship with Himself.
Jesus affirmed this same truth when He said, “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:37, NIV). Think about those words for a moment. No one who sincerely comes to Christ will ever be rejected. The enemy loves to whisper that we’ve wandered too far, failed too often, or disappointed God one too many times. Jesus says exactly the opposite. Every sincere step toward Him is met with open arms.
I remember teaching my children to swim when they were young. They would stand nervously on the edge of the pool while I waited in the water with my arms stretched out toward them. They trusted me, but taking that first step off the edge was always the hardest part. Once they jumped, they discovered I was already moving toward them.
Our Heavenly Father is even more faithful than that. He’s never standing at a distance waiting to see whether we’ve earned His acceptance. His arms are already open. He simply asks us to trust Him enough to step toward Him.
Perhaps your first step is opening your Bible again after it’s sat untouched for weeks. Maybe it’s setting aside a few quiet moments to pray honestly instead of trying to pray perfectly. Maybe it’s confessing a sin you’ve been carrying, forgiving someone who wounded you, or simply whispering, “Lord, I need You.” Whatever that first step looks like, don’t underestimate it. Small steps of faith often become the beginning of great seasons of spiritual renewal.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us, ”…Anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6, NIV). God is not reluctant to receive those who seek Him. He rewards them with what every heart longs for most—His presence. The greatest reward of seeking God isn’t merely answered prayer or changed circumstances. It is discovering Him more deeply.
I’ve walked with the Lord for many years now, and one truth has remained constant. Every time I’ve intentionally drawn near to Him, I’ve found that He was already drawing near to me. My circumstances didn’t always change overnight, but my heart did. His peace replaced my anxiety. His strength replaced my weakness. His perspective replaced my fears. It wasn’t because God had finally shown up. It was because I had turned my attention back toward the One who had never left.
Maybe today you’ve allowed disappointment, busyness, guilt, or discouragement to convince you that God feels distant. Don’t believe that lie. Your Father has never stopped loving you. He has never stopped watching for your return. Like the father of the prodigal son, His heart is filled with anticipation, ready to welcome you the moment you turn toward home.
You don’t have to know what the next fifty steps look like. You only need to take the first one.
Open His Word. Lift your heart in prayer. Call upon His name. Draw near to Him. Do this and you'll soon discover that His promise has been true all along: when you draw near to God, He faithfully draws near to you.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for never moving away from me, even when I’ve allowed distractions or discouragement to create distance in my own heart. Today I choose to take the first step toward You. Thank You for Your promise that when I draw near to You, You draw near to me. Renew my love for Your presence, strengthen my faith, and help me walk closely with You every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
