Most people have heard the story of Noah’s Ark. Even before I ever read the Bible, I somehow knew that story as a child. This morning, I read it again with my granddaughter — and it struck me anew just how extraordinary this event is in human history.
Why did it happen?
Why something so massive… so devastating?
Because evil had spread across the entire earth. Mankind’s heart had grown dark, corrupt, violent, and unwilling to turn back to God. Yet even in that, God showed mercy. While the ark was being built — over roughly a hundred years — God was giving people the opportunity to repent. Noah preached righteousness the entire time. God extended an open invitation to change… but no one responded.
Only Noah and his family believed.
How do we know the rest would never have turned? Because despite a century of preaching, warning, and invitation, not a single person repented. God — who knows the heart perfectly — saw that mankind had crossed a line of corruption from which they would not return. Judgment became the only merciful option left.
The flood remains the most tragic event the world has ever known. And the only reason it has not happened again is because Jesus came, paid the price for sin, and opened the way for anyone who believes to be cleansed and restored.
After the flood, God knew future generations might fear another global catastrophe. Imagine hearing that God once destroyed the entire earth — then watching storm clouds gather. Fear could have overwhelmed every new generation.
But God gave a promise — and a sign to go with it.
Genesis 9:11–16 (NIV)
“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood… I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant… Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant…”
Every time Noah’s descendants saw a rainbow, it reassured them:
God is faithful. God remembers. God keeps His promises.
And the same is true for us today.
Whenever you see a rainbow, let it be a “God moment.” Let it remind you that His promises to Noah still reach all the way to us — thousands of years later. He has given us so many promises in His Word. Whether or not those promises come with visible signs, He intends them to fill our hearts with hope, courage, and assurance.
We don’t need to overthink them.
We simply need to believe them.
Each promise is like putting fresh batteries in your faith-pack — restoring power, renewing confidence, reminding you that God’s mercy and grace are always inviting you closer.
As we turn from sin and walk with Him, we can live with holy confidence — certain of His love, certain of His faithfulness, and certain that His hand is upon our life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
2 Corinthians 1:20 (NLT)“For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding ‘Yes!’ And through Christ, our ‘Amen’ ascends to God for His glory.”
