Fresh Mannaby Pastor Tim BurtRenee and I had returned home from an international missions trip! Two of our bags did not arrive with us when we got home. One of the airline personnel—an extremely pleasant and kind man worked toward helping us track down our bags. I was struggling to keep a good attitude because I had experienced this kind of problem with this airline before. But knew I needed to lean on the Lord, pray, and trust things would work out. I managed to stay reasonably calm, and by the grace of God, I managed to keep a good attitude through the process. This kind man's attitude and effort really did help me. He modeled the love of God with his godly countenance and diligent effort!
As you obviously know, some days simply feel better than others. No matter how a day goes, you will feel best about a day when it’s a day that you've given your best effort and with a good attitude.Giving your best effort is a godly principle and helps you live without regret. Ecclesiastes 9:10 NLT says, “Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.” What this verse is saying is, live life giving your best because you won’t be able to recapture the moment and do it over.Proverbs 31:27-29(NIV) says to the wife and mother who has learned to give her best, “She carefully watches all that goes on in her household and does not have to bear the consequences of laziness. Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!" Proverbs 12:11(NIV) exhorts the person who diligently works hard, saying, “He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment.” Every day, we get up and do a routine of what we are called to do. Sometimes things go well, while other days make you feel like you’re pushing a boulder up a hill. Regardless, giving it your best helps you live without regret, and having a good attitude will help even a not-so-good day feel much better than it actually was.I was watching a gentleman at our church serve this past Sunday. I've talked with him many times, and his diligent effort and attitude never fail to bless me. He truly considers it an honor to serve people and God, and it shows.I see him in the verses in Colossians 3:22-24 (NIV) that say, “Those of you that serve under others, obey those who are over you in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Obey them willingly because of your reverent fear of the Lord. ‘Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and the (ultimate) Master you are serving is Christ.” These words are simple but powerful and give us the framework for making each day a better day! Lord, thank you for the honor of serving you! Help me give you my best that you and others around me will be blessed! That was the attitude of the man helping me with my lost bag. And he helped remind me that I also need to have that attitude—which I quickly built into my day! And it led to me having a better day! And to getting our bags back by the end of the day, Praise the Lord!"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all.
