Luke 10:19 says, “Behold, I give unto you power…”
I’m sure you, like me, have heard countless inspirational messages over the years. Children today often hear, “You can do anything if you put your mind to it!” It’s certainly better than being told, “You’re good for nothing and will never amount to anything.” Encouraging words are important—and God’s Word calls us to speak life, hope, and courage over others.
But inspirational words, if not rooted in God’s truth, become empty slogans. Real spiritual power and true ability come only by the promise of God’s Word and the active work of the Holy Spirit. That is where the strength to overcome obstacles and discouragement originates. To believe we can accomplish anything truly meaningful without God’s power is futile thinking. The only real power available on this earth is the power of God.
Before someone gives their life to Jesus Christ, God’s Word makes it clear that they are stuck under Satan’s influence—even if they don’t realize it or want to believe it. I remember thinking the same thing when someone first shared Jesus with me: “How could I possibly be under Satan’s power?” But Scripture is unmistakably clear.
Colossians 1:13 says, “[God] has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son…”
When you receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, you literally change kingdoms. You are rescued from Satan’s power and placed under—and given—God’s power.
Then Acts 1:8 declares the source of our strength:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you…”
Recently, I was talking with a man whose health had drastically deteriorated. He had lost nearly half his body weight and could barely walk. Yet the little walking he still did was to go outside for a cigarette. He knew it was destroying him—but he could not quit. I see this often at hospitals—doctors, nurses, and staff taking smoking breaks even though they watch the consequences of smoking every single day.
If you research the money lost to gambling, the destruction caused by alcohol and drugs, the staggering cost of cigarette-related illness, the billions spent on crime and incarceration, or the trillions required to defend nations from evil—one conclusion becomes obvious:
This world is under Satan’s grip.
People don’t even have the power to stop destructive habits on their own. Without Jesus, they don’t have the power to stop evil thinking, impulses, or behavior.
To most people, the concept of “power” sounds like comic-book fantasy—superheroes, movies, or video games. But God wants us to understand His power as something real, practical, and deeply personal. He wants us to experience His power at the most basic levels of life: the strength to make godly moment-by-moment decisions, the courage to obey Him, and the restraint to avoid sin.
Just think of how many people start a diet in the morning and quit by dinner. Even something that simple requires God’s strength!
Think of God’s power as His supernatural inner strength working in you—to help you live upright in a corrupt world, to stand boldly for your faith, to walk in courage, to resist temptation, and to see His hand guiding your steps. Think of it as His power working behind the scenes through your prayers, opening doors, leading you, protecting you, and giving you resilience you never had before.
When Jesus said, “Behold, I give unto you power…” He meant it.
If you’re a believer, God has placed His power within you. When you walk by faith in that promise, His strength becomes tangible and real.
Being inspired is good—but inspiration alone fades quickly. Motivation burns hot and then fizzles out. But faith in God’s power working within you becomes a core belief—a foundational strength you can draw from every single day.
2 Peter 1:3–4 (NKJV) declares this truth beautifully:
“…His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him… by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world…”
You don’t have to feel strong.
You just have to believe that He is, and that His power is in you.
